After a bit of searching, I found a calculator that does precisely that, and which is certainly useful for anyone trying to put together a DIY hood or simply find the best hood among those available on the market.Īfter a bit of searching on, I found a calculator that does the job for me (and potentially you as well). However, what is possible, is to calculate, for a given hood length, the optimal hood diameter for a round hood, i.e., the smallest diameter for the front rim of the hood that won't cause vignetting. But using effective shading as the only criterion leads to impractially long hoods. The longer the hood, the more effectively it shades the lens from extraneous light. As I mentioned in a prior post, there is no such thing as a hood that its optimal from all points of view. ![]()
